BENGALURU, INDIA — Google has unveiled a suite of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovations and initiatives specifically tailored for India, focusing on two critical sectors: agriculture and linguistic diversity. The announcements, made at an I/O Connect 2025 event in Bengaluru, underscore Google's commitment to building inclusive and impactful AI solutions that address India's unique challenges and opportunities.
A cornerstone of these new initiatives is the launch of the Agricultural Monitoring & Event Detection (AMED) API. This powerful new tool, developed by Google DeepMind and Google Partnerships Innovation team, builds upon last year's Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) API. The AMED API provides granular, field-level crop data, leveraging satellite imagery, crop labels, and machine learning to offer insights on crop types, field sizes, sowing and harvesting dates, and even historical agricultural activity over the last three years. This data, refreshed approximately every two weeks, aims to empower agritech startups, government agencies, and research institutions to develop targeted AI-enabled solutions that can significantly improve agricultural management, predict harvest volumes, and address specific crop needs, from soil conditions to climatic requirements.
Alok Talekar, Lead, Agriculture and Sustainability Research Lead at Google DeepMind, highlighted the transformative potential. "With AI research, and especially with AMED building on the foundation of ALU, we're working on accelerating crucial shifts, transforming broad insights to granular, real-time data, so that increasingly impactful solutions not only translate into benefit for India's farmers, but also bolster the nation against rising climate risks." Early adopters, such as TerraStack, are already using these APIs to power rural land intelligence systems, helping to modernize land records and assess climate vulnerability for farmers.
Simultaneously, Google is intensifying its focus on India's rich linguistic and cultural diversity through the expansion of its 'Amplify Initiative' to India, in collaboration with IIT-Kharagpur. This initiative aims to bridge critical knowledge gaps within Large Language Models (LLMs) by meticulously building high-quality, structured, and hyperlocal datasets in multiple Indic languages. Traditional AI models often struggle with the nuances of regional dialects and culture-specific terminology, limiting their effectiveness for diverse Indian users.
The Amplify Initiative follows a community-centric, expert-vetted approach to data collection, ensuring that potential biases are minimized and ethical standards are upheld. Researchers and field experts will feed information and phrases into privacy-preserving apps, with regional partners translating and annotating content. This effort builds on Google's prior work with Project Vaani, which has already contributed nearly 21,500 hours of speech audio and 835 hours of transcribed speech across 86 unique Indian languages, reflecting the contributions of over 112,000 speakers.

Through the Amplify Initiative, we are meticulously building the rich, hyperlocal context and cultural understanding that transforms raw information into profound knowledge."
These twin thrusts—empowering farmers with data-driven insights and making AI models more linguistically and culturally relevant—demonstrate Google's comprehensive strategy for AI adoption in India. By focusing on critical sectors and addressing fundamental data gaps, Google aims to ensure that the benefits of AI are inclusive and genuinely impactful for millions across the country, reinforcing its long-term commitment to India's digital transformation.
