  • What happened: Nine members of the Dargude family, including six children, died when their car plunged into a deep well in Nashik, Maharashtra.

  • Why it happened: The driver reportedly lost control of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga late Friday night (April 3) while navigating the Shivaji Nagar area after a family function.

  • The aftermath: Despite a massive midnight rescue operation using floodlights, local swimmers, and cranes, all nine occupants were recovered dead from the submerged vehicle.

A devastating tragedy unfolded late Friday night, April 3, 2026, when a car plunged into a deep, water-filled well in Maharashtra's Nashik district. The horrific accident claimed the lives of nine members of a single family—including six young children—leaving the local community in a state of profound shock and mourning.

What was supposed to be a joyful ride home following a local reunion function ended in one of the most fatal road accidents the Dindori taluka has witnessed this year.

The Fatal Plunge and Midnight Rescue

The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 PM in the Shivaji Nagar area of Dindori town.

  • The Crash: The family was travelling in a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. According to preliminary police reports, the driver failed to spot the deep, unbarricaded roadside well in the darkness. The vehicle veered violently off the road and plunged directly into the water-filled shaft, trapping all the occupants inside.
  • The Rescue Operation: Local residents who heard the crash immediately alerted the authorities. A massive, frantic rescue operation was launched under emergency floodlights involving the local police, disaster management teams, and specialized swimmers.
  • The Recovery: The depth of the well and the muddy water severely hampered initial rescue efforts. Authorities eventually had to deploy two heavy hydra cranes to hoist the submerged vehicle out of the water shortly after midnight. Tragically, by the time the mangled car was retrieved, all nine occupants had drowned.

The Victims: The Dargude Family

The victims were all members of the Dargude family, residents of Indore village located within the Dindori taluka. They were returning home after attending a reunion event at a local banquet hall.

The deceased have been identified as:

  • Sunil Dattu Dargude (32)
  • Reshma Sunil Dargude (Wife of Sunil)
  • Asha Anil Dargude (32)
  • Six children: Five girls aged between 7 and 14 years, and an 11-year-old boy.

Their bodies were immediately transferred to the government hospital in Dindori for post-mortem examinations.

The BIGSTORY Reframe — The Infrastructure Deficit

While the immediate police FIR attributes the accident to the driver "losing control" of the vehicle, the true "Missed Angle" in this tragedy is the lethal infrastructure deficit in rural and semi-urban Maharashtra.

Open, water-filled agricultural and roadside wells without protective parapet walls or crash barriers are a notorious hazard across the state's rural belts. Combined with a severe lack of street lighting and inadequate road signage on sharp turns, these routes turn into death traps after dark. This is not the first time a vehicle has plunged into a water body in the Dindori region, highlighting a systemic failure by local civic and public works departments to secure dangerous roadside hazards.

What This Means Moving Forward

  • Investigation Underway: The Dindori police have registered an accidental death report and are currently scanning local CCTV footage to determine the exact speed of the vehicle and whether any other external factors contributed to the vehicle leaving the roadway.
  • Demand for Accountability: Local residents are already raising demands for an immediate safety audit of the Dindori-Nashik stretch. The construction of retaining walls around open roadside wells and the installation of high-visibility reflectors must become an urgent priority for the district administration.
  • National Safety Concerns: This accident serves as a grim reminder of India's broader road safety crisis. Even as the nation debates high-stakes national security issues and voter protections, basic civic infrastructure continues to claim hundreds of innocent lives daily across the country.
