An AIR 1 rank in IIT-JEE is supposed to settle your future — Computer Science, the best IIT, a high-paying career. Rajesh Gopakumar had that rank in 1987, and chose Physics instead, with zero pressure forcing his hand. This is the story of how that one decision took him from IIT Kanpur to Princeton, to two theorems that now carry his name and eventually, back to India to build something bigger than his own career.

In India, if you get AIR 1 in IIT-JEE, people assume your future is already settled. Computer Science. The best IIT in the country. A high-paying career. Nobody expects you to think twice about it the path is laid out for you.
In 1987, that rank landed on a teenager from Kolkata named Rajesh Gopakumar.
He looked at that "settled" future. And he chose something else.
Gopakumar used his AIR 1 to get into IIT Kanpur but instead of Computer Science, he picked a five-year course in Physics.
That decision still gets talked about, decades later, because of what it wasn't. It wasn't rebellion for the sake of it. It wasn't a "consolation" choice either nothing forced his hand.
His rank gave him every option; he simply picked the one nobody else was picking. And it wasn't because he didn't understand what he was giving up. He knew exactly how much money and prestige Computer Science offered.
That's the real point of his story: a rank tells you what doors are open. It never tells you which one you actually want to walk through.
Here's what made it hard: Physics didn't come with any of the support systems that Computer Science had. No placement season promising a good job. No long list of seniors who'd taken the same path and done well. No friends cheering him on the way they would if he'd picked engineering.
Having more options doesn't make a decision like this easier. It makes it harder.
The more doors you can open, the more it costs you to walk away from all of them but one.
Usually, stories like this have a clear obstacle some hardship that forces the hero to change direction. That's not what happened here. Gopakumar's biggest challenge was that nothing was forcing him to make this choice. No setback. No closed door. He had to find his own reason to walk away from a sure thing, and then live with that decision without any guarantee it would work out.
It did work out. He got his PhD from Princeton University, then worked at Harvard University. His work eventually produced two results that now carry his name in theoretical physics — the Gopakumar-Vafa duality and the Gopakumar-Gross relation.
Having something named after you in science means your work has become a permanent part of how people in that field think and solve problems.
By 2001, Gopakumar had basically everything an AIR 1 topper is "supposed" to get top-tier education, global recognition, a comfortable life abroad. He'd just gotten there through Physics instead of Computer Science.
Most stories like this would end right there brilliant Indian scientist succeeds abroad, the end. But Gopakumar's story didn't stop.
He came back to India. First to the Harish-Chandra Research Institute, and later as Director of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS-TIFR) in Bengaluru an institute built to strengthen science within India, instead of sending more talent abroad.
Today, he isn't chasing his next big personal discovery. He's doing the slower, less glamorous work of building something that helps the next generation of Indian scientists have a real choice the same choice he once had to make on his own, with no support.
Look at both decisions together, and they're really the same choice made twice, just at different scales once about a subject, and once about an entire system.
And that's the real lesson here. It's about what you do with the doors that are open to you. A rank, a title, a job offer none of these decide your life for you. They're just leverage. What you do with that leverage is entirely up to you.
What makes Gopakumar's story worth telling isn't that he had to overcome the odds, he didn't. That's exactly why it matters. He'd already "made it" twice over: once with a rank that could open any door in the country, and again with a career that needed no further justification. Nobody pushed him to change either time.
And that's precisely what makes both decisions so hard to copy. It's easy to change direction when you have no other choice. It's much harder to walk away from a path that's working perfectly well, simply because it isn't the path that means the most to you.
1. His PhD guide later won the Nobel Prize.
Gopakumar did his PhD at Princeton under David Gross who went on to win the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics. So his mentor wasn't just any professor; he was a future Nobel laureate.
2. He wasn't just a topper — he was big on campus culture too.
At IIT Kanpur, Gopakumar didn't just excel academically. He also represented IITK in quizzing and cultural events, and won top honours at IITK's cultural fest ("Culfest") back then. Most retellings only focus on the academic side this part usually gets left out.
3. His roots trace back to Kerala, not Bengal.
Even though he was born and raised in Kolkata, his family actually hails from Kerala. A small detail that rarely comes up.
4. He spent time at one of the most famous scientific institutions in the world.
Between 2001 and 2004, alongside joining HRI in India, he was also a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton the same institute where Einstein once worked.
5. He's collected a long list of India's top science honours.
Most people only know about the Gopakumar-Vafa duality. Few know he's also received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (2009) considered one of India's highest science honours plus the ICTP Prize (2006), the TWAS Prize (2013), and the J.C. Bose 34wryFellowship (2015).
6. He helped start a global network for young scientists.
He's a founding member of the Global Young Academy an international body created to give young scientists from around the world a voice in science policy.
7. His path to HRI wasn't direct.
After Princeton, he didn't go straight back to India. He first spent a few years as a research associate at Harvard, and only joined the Harish-Chandra Research Institute in 2001 a detail most quick bios skip over.
We've all read plenty of struggle stories before. Someone hits a rough patch, fights through it, and comes out on top. That's a familiar pattern.
Gopakumar's story is different and that's exactly what makes it stand out.
His struggle didn't come from a setback. Nothing went wrong in his life that forced him to change direction. Instead, he made a choice that most people wouldn't even think of making: he walked away from an entire field everyone expected him to join, just to explore something completely different.
That's a much harder kind of struggle. It's easy to change course when things aren't working. It's a lot harder to change course when everything is already working and you do it anyway, just because a different path means more to you.
And that's exactly what he did. He didn't just switch fields. He built something entirely his own inside that new field his own name, his own identity, work that people now recognize as his. That's what makes this journey worth admiring more than the usual struggle stories: he didn't fight his way out of a bad situation. He walked away from a good one, on purpose, to go build something that was genuinely his.
