MANGALURU, KARNATAKA — The medical fraternity in Mangaluru is in mourning following the tragic demise of a first-year postgraduate medical student due to COVID-19. The young doctor, a 27-year-old pursuing postgraduate studies in surgery at the Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025, after contracting the virus.

The deceased medico, originally from Hardalli in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district, had recently joined his postgraduate course. His parents are currently settled in Mudigere, Chikkamagaluru district, where his final rites will be conducted.

According to sources from the medical college, the doctor was not assigned to COVID-19 duty. He had been diagnosed with COVID-19 but was reportedly in a stable condition and undergoing treatment in a regular ward. The sudden deterioration and eventual demise of a young, otherwise healthy professional has sent shockwaves through the medical community and among his peers.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by COVID-19, even as India's battle against the virus has largely transitioned into an endemic phase. Health authorities and experts across the country have confirmed that while widespread waves are less likely, the virus continues to manifest in localized, sporadic clusters. Recent data from the Union Health Ministry indicates a decline in active COVID-19 cases nationwide, with only a few deaths reported daily, underscoring the severity of this particular case involving a young frontline healthcare worker.

The passing of a young medico highlights the inherent risks faced by medical professionals, who are constantly exposed to various pathogens. Even with widespread vaccination coverage and improved treatment protocols, the virus can still prove fatal, particularly if underlying vulnerabilities or aggressive variants are involved. While the official cause and contributing factors will likely be detailed after an internal inquiry by the hospital and health authorities, the incident brings to the fore the sacrifices made by healthcare workers.

The medical community in Mangaluru and across Karnataka has expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased doctor. This loss reaffirms the need for continued vigilance, adherence to safety protocols, and robust support systems for medical students and practitioners who remain at the forefront of public health.
