Patna Hospital Shooter Arrested in Calcutta

In a significant development in the sensational murder of gangster Chandan Mishra inside a Patna hospital, police have arrested four key individuals in Kolkata, including the alleged main shooter and his cousin, who is believed to have orchestrated the plot. The arrests were made during a joint operation by the Patna Police, Kolkata Police, and the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF).

The incident, which shocked the nation, occurred on July 17, 2025, when five gunmen brazenly entered Paras HMRI Hospital in Patna and shot dead Chandan Mishra, a murder convict who was admitted for treatment while out on parole. CCTV footage of the assailants calmly walking through the hospital premises before and after the shooting had gone viral, raising serious questions about hospital security and law and order.

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  1. Tauseef alias Badshah: The alleged main shooter, seen on CCTV footage leading the gunmen into the hospital room.
  2. Nishu Khan alias Yousuf Khan: Tauseef's cousin, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the murder plot. Police sources indicate that the conspiracy was hatched at Nishu's residence in Samanpura, Patna, which is strategically located close to the hospital. Nishu, who is physically challenged, was reportedly present near the hospital at the time of the incident, and his car was used by the accused to escape.
  3. Harsh alias Harish Kumar: An associate who helped Tauseef escape after the murder.
  4. Bhim Kumar: Another associate involved in facilitating the escape.

According to police, the accused fled Patna in a white SUV belonging to Nishu Khan and traveled to West Bengal via Gaya, Barhi, and Ranchi. Their movements were tracked through CCTV footage, including at toll plazas, and technical intelligence, including IMEI data of their mobile phones.

The joint team successfully surrounded Tauseef and his accomplices in a guesthouse in the Anandapur police station area of Kolkata late on Saturday night. While one woman, initially detained, was later released, the four men were formally arrested. They were subsequently produced before a court in Alipore, which granted the Bihar Police transit remand to bring them back to Patna for further questioning.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the murder was a result of a gang rivalry, with jailed gangster Sheru Singh, currently lodged in West Bengal's Purulia jail, allegedly orchestrating the hit. Police sources indicate that Sheru had a long-standing feud with Chandan Mishra and allegedly promised Tauseef a sum of ₹10 lakh for the killing. Nishu's residence reportedly served as the base of operations for the assassins in the days leading up to the crime, facilitating logistical support and reconnaissance of the hospital.

While these four key arrests mark a significant breakthrough, the police have stated that a total of nine people were directly involved in the murder, and four other shooters are still absconding. Efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining culprits and recover the weapons used in the crime.

The swift action by the combined police forces highlights the growing inter-state coordination in tackling organized crime. However, the incident also underscores concerns about the deepening nexus of criminals across state borders and the challenges in maintaining law and order, particularly when high-profile criminals are involved.
